Keeping Cool Under Pressure
I think it’s safe to say that summer has officially arrived here in the UK! Whilst many of us have been searching for the nearest fan, cold drink or patch of shade this week, it struck us that entrepreneurs and business owners have a lot in common with the weather we’ve been experiencing.
Running a business often means operating under pressure. Whether it’s managing cash flow, navigating regulatory changes, dealing with staffing challenges or making difficult decisions, business owners regularly find themselves in situations where keeping a cool head is essential. The most successful entrepreneurs aren’t necessarily those who avoid challenges, but those who remain calm, adaptable and focused when things heat up.
As accountants, we see this resilience every day in our clients. It is one of the reasons why small businesses continue to thrive despite economic uncertainty, changing regulations and unexpected obstacles. So, whilst the temperatures may eventually return to normal, the ability to stay cool under pressure remains one of the most valuable skills any business owner can develop.
Political Change Ahead – What Could It Mean for Tax?
The political landscape shifted dramatically this week with Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing his resignation, triggering a Labour leadership contest and the prospect of a new Prime Minister taking office later this year. Early indications suggest that Andy Burnham is the frontrunner to succeed him, although the leadership process is still unfolding.
Whenever there is a significant change in political leadership, there is naturally speculation around future tax policy, business support measures and wider economic strategy. While it is too early to know exactly what changes may emerge, periods of political transition often create opportunities for governments to introduce new priorities and reforms.
For business owners, landlords and individuals, this serves as a reminder that the tax landscape can change quickly. As always, we will be keeping a close eye on developments and will keep you informed of any announcements that may affect your finances or future planning.
Welcome to Bea Smith
We are delighted to welcome Bea Smith to Richard Riley & Associates as our new apprentice.
Investing in young talent has always been important to us. Apprentices bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, whilst gaining valuable real-world experience and professional qualifications alongside their studies.
For small businesses, apprenticeships can offer significant benefits beyond simply developing future talent. Government incentives, training support and funding opportunities can make apprenticeships a highly cost-effective way to grow your team whilst investing in the next generation of skilled professionals.
Many businesses are surprised to discover just how much support is available. If you’ve been considering expanding your team, it may be worth exploring whether an apprenticeship could be the right solution for your business.
We look forward to supporting Bea throughout her apprenticeship journey and helping her develop a successful career within accountancy.
Making Tax Digital – Are You Ready?
One of the most interesting discussions we had recently came from a Propertymark conference, where it was revealed that a Freedom of Information request found that only around 25% of the estimated 800,000 taxpayers who need to register for Making Tax Digital (MTD) have done so.
If accurate, that means hundreds of thousands of landlords and self-employed individuals could be heading towards the new rules without realising they are affected.
This is particularly concerning because many people still believe that Making Tax Digital is something that only affects larger businesses. In reality, the rollout is expanding and many landlords and self-employed individuals will soon be required to comply with the new digital reporting requirements.
Failing to prepare could lead to unnecessary stress, additional administration and potentially significant penalties for non-compliance.
If you are a landlord or self-employed and you’re unsure whether Making Tax Digital applies to you, now is the time to find out. Our team can help you understand your obligations, select suitable software and ensure you are fully prepared before the deadlines arrive.
Don’t leave it until HMRC contacts you. Read our latest blog for more information on this.
