March 2026 Accounting Insights

As we head into March, there are some significant developments on the tax landscape that business owners and landlords should have firmly on their radar. With Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now just around the corner, alongside ongoing discussions around improving HMRC processes, this month’s edition focuses on what the changes mean in practice and how to stay one step ahead. We’re also taking a moment to recognise International Women’s Day and the positive impact of supporting others in business and beyond.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is almost here

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with combined trading and rental income over £50,000 will move to the new MTD for Income Tax system. This means keeping digital records, sending quarterly updates to HMRC via approved software, and completing a year-end declaration instead of the traditional annual Self Assessment return.

As eligibility is based on your most recent tax return, now’s a sensible time to check whether you’ll be affected and start planning ahead.

Check out our latest blog outlining key stages and if you’re unsure how these changes may affect you, please do get in touch with the team.

Call for Tax Return Tracking System

The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) has urged HMRC to introduce a straightforward tracking system for tax returns, claims and correspondence.

At present, there is limited visibility for taxpayers and agents once documents have been submitted, with no simple way to confirm receipt or monitor progress. The ATT suggests that a basic digital tracking facility,  similar to those used for passport applications or parcel deliveries, could significantly improve transparency.

Proposals include issuing confirmation of receipt with a reference number, providing indicative processing times and offering live status updates.

Greater clarity around progress could help reduce uncertainty and minimise follow-up calls, allowing HMRC to focus resources on more complex cases.

It will be interesting to see whether HMRC responds to the proposal in the months ahead.

International Women’s Day 2026 – Give To Gain

8th March marked International Women’s Day, with this year’s theme, “Give To Gain.” It’s a powerful reminder that when we offer support, encouragement and opportunity to others, we all benefit.

Whether it’s challenging bias, celebrating achievements, sharing knowledge or simply championing the women and girls around us, small actions can make a meaningful difference. Creating a culture of support helps open doors and drive real progress.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can each play our part because by giving support today, we help build a more equal tomorrow.
